Austrias neighborhood, also known as “el Madrid de los Austrias”, got its name at the time when Charles I, from the Habsburg dynasty, was reigning in Spain. And it’s due to his decision of building squares and churches that today we can walk around and admire the beautiful Plaza Mayor. Cultural Activities

  • Guided tours: Austrias is the most historic neighborhood in Madrid, with a great architectural offer. This is why we recommend you to take a guided tour through its most important places, it’s the only way to truly learn about Spanish history. There’s a lot of different types of tour you can take, such as bike tours, walking tours, night tours… whatever sounds more interesting to you! Another thing you can’t miss is the changing of guard of the Royal Palace, that takes place every Wednesday. 
  • Jardines de Sabatini: take some time to visit this spectacular garden made of fountains, trees and white marble sculptures. Here’s a quick tip: visit it at nightfall, where you will be able to admire the sky changing and the contrast of the palace and the garden’s colors.  
  • San Miguel Market: what about food? Austrias neighborhood is home to one of the most interesting street food markets in the city, San Miguel Market. If you want to mix with the local culture and gastronomy, we highly recommend you to visit it.

Nightlife in Madrid

Austrias neighborhood is located in the centre of Madrid, so the party here is assured. You can find plenty of bars with live music at weekends, as well as others that offer flamenco shows and dinners.
