It’s a day to celebrate, and if you are living in Madrid you don’t want to miss the chance. Shops, restaurants and streets all decorated for the big day, with fresh flowers, romantic details, anything you can imagine.

There’s a lot of things you can do to celebrate this day, so gather with your friends, family or your couple and… happy Valentine’s Day!

What is the origin of Valentine's Day?

This day is celebrated on February 14th of each year. Even though you should express your love to your partner everyday of the year, this is a special occasion to remind him/her how special he/she is for you.

We are sure you have heard a lot of things about this tradition, but have you ever heard about its origins? Today it still remains a mystery, the only thing we know it’s that this festivity contains both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

Do you know who Saint Valentine was? The legend says he was a priest during the third century in Rome. At the time, it was believed  single men were better soldiers than the married ones. Valentine found this unfair so he outlawed married to young men in secret. When the Emperor found out he put him to death. Valentine was a martyr so now this day is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of his death.

Valentine’s Day 2020 comes strong, are you excited?

Best Things to do on Valentine's Day in Madrid

In this guide we want to recommend you the best things to do so you can surprise your partner or your friend. Or how knows, maybe it’s you who gets a surprise! Valentine’s day is celebrated differently in every country, so here are some of the most popular ways of celebrating this day in Madrid:

  • See Madrid from above: what’s more romantic than seeing Madrid’s skyline with your love? There’s a lot of places where you can go to enjoy the views. We recommend to go to a rooftop bar and have some drinks as the perfect night date. The perfect rooftop bars with the best cocktails are located in the city centre.

Another option is to go to the Teleferico in casa de Campo, where you can enjoy Madrid’s views and then have a romantic walk.

  • Romantic dinner: this is an interesting idea if you want to make something different from the usual things you do with your partner. There’s a lot of hotels and cozy restaurants where you can book a table for two and enjoy a delicious dinner. Here are some of them:

-La Habanera

-The Camoatí

-Tartan roof at Círculo de Bellas Artes

-The Casino’s terrace

  • Hotel and Spa: when Valentine’s Day is coming, a lot of hotels in Madrid have offers for spending the day in the spa and then the night. But don’t book a room in a random hotel, check these ones we recommend:

-Alaia Holidays: located in Gran Vía. They give you the option of preparing your own dinner, which is perfect. They are very well decorated and they have a jacuzzi in every room.

-Melia Madrid Princesa: this hotel is very popular on this day. It’s a very luxurious, so if you want to spend a bit more money, check the amazing suites.

-Catalonia Gran Vía: another luxurious hotel that offers jacuzzi and amazing views of Madrid. It’s located in the city centre.

Creative Valentine's date ideas

This day is a special day and you should take the time to prepare and enjoy the ideal date with your loved or loved ones. This day doesn’t consist on spending all your money doing expensive plans, sometimes it’s better to prepare simple but special dates. That’s why we think it’s a great idea to think of creative ideas for a date, instead of doing the usual and typical things.

Here are some creative ideas:

  • A bonfire: if you are thinking about having a sweet date, grab some marshmallows, some chocolates and make a bonfire. Enjoy and relax with your partner. This is a great idea if you live in the suburbs of Madrid.
  • Dancing: another original idea is to go dancing. You can go together to your favorite club, to a bar with live music or you can enjoy a class of a different dance you’ve never tried before. This could be very funny and entertaining.
  • A customised tour: if you love details, this idea is perfect for you. Prepare a customised tour around Madrid, and stop in the places where you shared memories together. Give your partner little surprises in every spot, such as flowers, chocolates, a valentine card… he/she will love it! There’s nothing better than having a partner that knows you very well.
  • A wine bar crawl: this is a very creative idea because it isn’t something you would usually do on a normal date. Instead of having dinner on the same place, hop from bar to bar and taste some wines along with some tapas. Madrid is the perfect city to do this, so don’t think about it twice!

Madrid is a big city and as you can see, there’s a lot of plans and places. It’s a nice thing to explore them with your partner on a romantic date that neither of you will forget.

We wish you a happy Valentine’s Day!
