Florence, the main city in the region of Tuscany, is the place we dream about when we think about the typical Italian landscapes, the greatest cuisine, quality wine, enchanting architecture and art masterpieces.
Whether you are living in Florence and your family and friends are coming to visit you, or you are planning to go there for a quick escape, make sure that you don’t miss any of the highlights of the city.
There are so many things to see and do, since Florence is the cradle of Renaissance, filled with iconic places, but it also boasts such a unique culture, gastronomy, dialect and traditions. It’s well worth visiting and we are here to plan an itinerary to make the most of your 2 days in Florence.
The historical centre of this enchanting city is quite small, therefore is perfect to explore by walk (or by bike, if you want to do some workout and see more things in a shorter time).
Here you’ll be able to find hidden treasures, such as some handicraft shops called “bottega”, taste a handmade ice cream, discover the beautiful and traditional narrow streets, eat a delicious pizza, a Fiorentina steak, or even try the best lampredotto in Florence.
The first thing that will impress you is the magnificent Renaissance-inspired architecture: museum, churches and domes, colonnades, streets and bridges will make you live a truly time-travel.
Probably the most iconic place in Florence, this oustanding cathedral designed by Brunelleschi back in the 14th century is what you can’t miss at all. The Duomo, whose name is Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is situated right in the heart of the city, in Piazza del Duomo. Here you have the chance to admire pure artistic beauty: frescos on the walls, mosaic floors, the greatest dome and many statues. If you have time, you could also climb to the top of the cathedral, and enjoy the view over the city. Our tip is to book the tickets in advance.
A must-do cultural activity is visiting the Uffizi Gallery, home to most of the Italian artistic heritage; it is actually one of the most important museums in the world!
It is located alongside the Arno River, few steps away from the Duomo of Florence.
From Leonardo Da Vinci to Michelangelo, from Raffaello to Botticelli, here you will be surrounded by a century-old priceless treasure.
This is the Old Bridge connecting the centre of Florence to the southbank district of the river. Why is it so important and famous in the city? It’s the oldest bridge in here and since the 12th century it hosts handicraft and other small shops (jewellery, souvenirs, art, etc.) that make it unique; you won’t see another bridge like this in Italy!
The Pitti Palace is one of the most elegant buildings in Florence and you’ll find it right after you cross Ponte Vecchio.
Its Renaissance inspired architecture hosts, in the inside, many impressive art galleries and also a beautiful garden called “Giardino de Boboli”. It is worth a visit!
What is a true medieval Italian city without a proper bell tower? Well, you can find this typical feature in Piazza della Signoria, the square that was once symbol of the political power in Florence. Here you can admire the worldwide famous David by Michelangelo (this is a replica, you can find the real one inside Galleria dell’Accademia of Florence).
Moreover, this square hosts the amazing Renaissance symbol of the civil power: Palazzo Vecchio.
Is there anything better than ending off your sightseeing day with an unforgettable sunset over Florence? One of the most famous (and our favourite) point of view is Piazzale Michelangelo, a huge square overlooking the city. The skyline of this beautiful city has literally everything to offers; domes, unique historical buildings, narrow streets and much more.
Getting to know the local costumes is the best way to learn about a place and its people. Here, fiorentini use to go to the markets to buy food, home stuffs, flowers or clothes. San Lorenzo market is one of the most famous places, but you can find many others. Here you have the chance to take cute photos of many colorful and lively spots and buy some souvenirs to bring back home.
Enjoy Florence with your friends and family and get ready to dip into a unique Italian experience!
